Beyond These Walls aims to improve the lives of people living in local communities and increase awareness of the diversity this area has to offer.
The University of Maryland is surrounded by a vibrant, diverse community. Unfortunately, students are often cut off from the surrounding area. As a result, they do not interact with local residents.
Characteristics of a Beyond These Walls project:
Serves the local communities surrounding the University of Maryland.
Involves direct interaction between volunteers from campus and members of the community.
Transfers ideas and insights between the community and campus.
Does not focus on a specific gender, ethnic, or religious group — everybody is welcome

That's where we come in: Beyond These Walls focuses its activities on community outreach efforts which involve a high level of interaction between students of the University of Maryland and members of the surrounding community. This benefits both campus and community because it leads to new understanding.
There is an urgent need for this interaction between members of our campus and people in the local community. For example, when we started working
with ESL classes in nearby
Langley Park, many students had no idea what the University of Maryland was, or where it was located. This reflects a general lack of
relations. Our aim is to change this.
All members of the campus community are encouraged to help. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni can join together to help those in need only a few blocks away. By reaching out to the neighborhoods around us, we can build a better future and begin to make campus community a part of the local community.
